Uno

... is a commercial card game. It was originally developed in 1971 by Merle Robbins, a barber based in Reading, Ohio (a suburb of Cincinnati). Since 1992 it has been marketed by Mattel. It's described (by Wikipedia) as a "shedding' game – in other words, one where the idea is to get rid of all your cards. The name is simply the Spanish (or Italian) word for 'one'.

The 108 cards are four wild cards, four "wild draw four"cards, and 25 each of four colours – red, yellow, green and blue. When it's your turn to play, you can either play a card to match the one on top of the discard pile in colour or value, play a wild card or a wild draw four card, or pick up a card from the pack (which you can play if it matches the one on top of the discard pile). If you play a wild card, this has some effect on the subsequent play. Depending on which wild card you played, the next player may miss a turn, they may have to pick up two cards and miss a turn, or play may switch direction, or you can nominate the colour to be matched next. If you play a wild draw four card, the next player must pick up four cards and miss a turn.

The above information all comes courtesy of Wikipedia; I have never come across Uno myself, and (judging by the response to this question in the quiz I took part in) I have to wonder whether anyone else in the UK has. But it sounds very similar to one that we used to play when I was young – round about 1971, in fact. IIRC it was played with an ordinary pack of 52 cards, and I think we called it Switch.
